Do You Struggle To Understand Why God Asks Us To Tithe?
James Greer
Mar 13, 2022 18m
There are many reasons why Christians may be reluctant to start tithing. First, you must understand why God asks us to tithe. It is not about the amount, but our heart and sacrifice. Obedience brings blessings. Disobedience brings a curse. Video recorded at Pineville, Louisiana.

James Greer: [00:00:00] Matthew 18:5 says, whoever sees one of these little children in my name receives me. Sometimes that's the closest physically you'll ever get to ministering to Jesus. Man, I love it. Yeah. You think. Uh-huh. Anyway, as we continue our series, I mean, I'm loving this because, you know, you can read God's Word and read the same message to get new insights. You do know that? And man, when I read this message, I got all kinds of exciting new insights. You guys will be sorry. It's all right though. But I told you there was three secrets to being an angry Christian. And what I want to do - you're making me angry - is first you need to know what righteous anger is. And we're going to see what righteous anger is in this message in a few minutes. And then you need to learn how to respond correctly to righteous anger, and you're going to get to see that in a minute. And then you need to know how to let it go. I think what we'll do though, instead, I think we'll read the message, and then I think I'll give you some insight. And it's going to be in Matthew 21:12. It says, and Jesus went into the Temple of God, and He drove out those cats. It doesn’t say like that. And He drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple. And He threw over what?
James Greer: [00:01:28] What did He throw over? Yes, He threw over the table of the money changers and the seats of whom sold the doves. And He said to them, it is written, my house shall be called a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves. This next verse is really cool because when He did that, first of all, when He cleansed the temple, then the blind and the lame came into the temple, and He healed them. There's an insight there. Some of you today might need your life cleansed where you can be healed. And then the chief priest, those are the religious people and the scribes, they saw these wonderful things that He had done and the children cried out to the temple, saying, Hosanna to the son of David. And they, this is the priests, they were indignant. It made them angry. It made them angry because of what Jesus was doing because He was healing. And Jesus said to them, do you hear what these are saying? And Jesus said to them, yes. Have you never read out of the mouth of babies and the nursing infants, you have perfect praise? So let me give you a couple of insights. Number one, number one, Jesus knows what's going on in His house. Did you know that Jesus is in the house? Amen? Because Jesus is in the house.
James Greer: [00:02:58] Let me ask you a question. If Jesus was here today, physically, would you act any different? Probably so. So however you would act different, why don't you just act different? Because Jesus is in the house. Jesus’ presence is in the house. He knows what you’re doing. He knows what you’re thinking. He knows if you're thinking about the world or the Word. So whatever you would do, whether it's you'd pay more attention, whether you’d take notes, whatever you would do, just do it just like Jesus is in the house. We're going to act like Jesus is in the house because the next thing Jesus did, He was in the house, He didn't like them guys. He took the table and He turned it over and He drove them out. Jesus, it's not like they make it in movies. They make Jesus in the movies look like He was a wimp. But not Jesus. No, no. He was a warrior. He was strong. He came in. He had a whip, and He drove them suckers out of the house. Oh, I told you, you’re going to be sorry.
Actor: [00:03:51] Who are you? I’m Jesus and this is my house. And it will be known as a house of prayer. But you have made it into a den of thieves. Get out! Get out! Get out. Get out.
James Greer: [00:04:10] Yeah, baby. That's what you call righteous anger. Isn’t it something the way they make Jesus on TV? Sometimes they make Him look like this little thing that’s weak and scrawny. Jesus is the man, huh? And that is righteous anger. Righteous anger is Jesus was standing up what would make Jesus upset. Now what breaks God's heart should break our heart. Now you've got to learn when you talk about righteous anger, you also got to learn how to respond to it. Now most of the time, that's not how we're to respond. Okay? Now, physically it’s not the way we respond most times. Well, maybe if you were there and somebody was beating a baby or something, maybe you want to stop them. But maybe like Putin invading Ukraine. That might make you angry. That would be righteous anger. Amen? But there's a few things you could do, there's not much you can do physically but you might give financially. But you can pray and intercede for them. Amen? I mean, last week I sent out an email on how to pray for Ukraine. If you didn't get it, it’s because we don't have your email and your phone number in our bank. So just write on the next step card your email, name, and phone number, and you'll get it in there. So that should make us very, very angry. But Jesus, He was not a wimp. Exodus 15:3 says, and the Lord said - thank you. It's trying to play our service on my phone.
James Greer: [00:05:54] The Lord is a man of war, and the Lord is His name. I mean, you don't have to worry about what's going on in the house. God is quite capable of taking care of it. But Jesus, He's an example of a man's man. Amen? Most people don't know what a man's man is. A man's man is this. He's tough enough to throw that over and turn it over, right? But He's humble enough to wash the disciples’ feet. See, He's tough, and He's tender. 1 Corinthians 16:3 says, act like me. Be strong. That's tough, right? But whatever you do, do it with kindness and love. That's tender. I mean, He was tough and He's tender. I can't wait this Wednesday night, I’m going to be in with Dean Scott and the men at 6:30. If you've never been there, I want to invite you. But I want you to remember that Jesus is tough and He's tender. Not only that, Jesus knows how we spend our money in His house. He knows. I mean, if Jesus was in the house, would you spend your money different? I can remember, Debbie, I can remember who was preaching, I can remember where we were at, and I can remember when they started - I went to church for a long time. I never tithed at first.
James Greer: [00:07:12] I just didn't. I thought it was all my money. I didn't learn for a while that it was all God's money. And Dr. Jean Preacher was preaching, and he was preaching at Faith. And he came in, one of the verses he used was Luke 6:38. Said, give and it shall be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, to overflowing. And then he went into Malachi 3. And he said, will a man rob God? Yet he robs me. He didn't even tell us what, I didn't even know what a tithe was because I didn't want preach. You know why I don't preach on tithing most of the time? Because most churches think, you know what the preachers want? They want your money. I don't go to church because all they do is preach about money. I don't work on commission. Matter of fact, I don't even get paid. I pay to preach. But God doesn't need your money. But I mean, I started out just tithing a little bit. Then give a little more, give a little more, give a little more. And then I think it was the greatest thing we ever did. But I say to you, in what way have we robbed you? That's what they were doing. They were misusing God's money. They were actually robbing from God which was made Jesus this angry. That was righteous anger.
James Greer: [00:08:40] I think there's several reasons that I didn't tithe, and one, I didn't even understand what it meant. And what I didn't understand it, it didn't really bother me. For a long time, I wished I didn't understand it. But to tithe is the first tenth. The second reason many people don't tithe and I didn't tithe, I thought, my goodness, I give you 10 percent. That's a lot out of my check. I didn't trust God. I just didn’t trust Him. I said, man, if I give that, I might not be able to pay my bills. He says, trust me and try me. And so that's why one reason we have a tithe guarantee in there today. You can actually say, I'm going to start tithing and start tithing if you want to five percent, 10 percent. You should tithe at 10 percent. And after 90 days, if you're not as well off as you were, nobody will know it. You can bring it back and we'll write you a check back. That's better than the grocery stores. I mean, you know, these stores, they come and say, you buy this, you don't like it, bring it back. We'll give it to you. Here's a church that says, hey, you tithe 10 percent, we give you money back. I'd never heard of that. But God does not need your money.
James Greer: [00:09:52] So there's three reasons. One, you don't understand it. Second, you don't believe you can afford to do it. And third, you're just going to be disobedient. But you see, the reason that I do it because Malachi 3:9 says, you are cursed with a curse. For you have robbed me, even this whole nation. See, the reason I want you to do it is you'll never be financially where you could be if you don't tithe. See, I personally believe that me and Debbie wouldn't be where we are today if we wouldn’t have start tithing and giving above our tithe. But then he says, swap it around, he says this is really why I want you to tithe. Bring your tithe into the storehouse. Why? That there may be food in my house, the storehouse is the church. You can give to other organizations. You can give to St. Jude's. We just had a great St. Jude's thing. But you bring your tithe to the church. Why? That there might be food in the house. And try me. This one of the few places that God says, You can test me here and I'll show you what I can do. Sayeth the Lord of Hosts. He said, you know what I'll do? I'll open up the doors or windows of Heaven, and I'll pour out a blessing such that you cannot have room enough to receive it.
James Greer: [00:11:02] So God says, look, I just want you to do it. I want to be obedient to you. I want to take care of you. Because really, see, where your treasure is, there's your heart. And God wants your heart. That's what He wants more than anything else. So pray about it. Think about it. There's two things I want you pray about. I want you pray about the children's department, and I want you to pray about tithing if you hadn't been tithing. Isn't that an exciting message? God said, be a cheerful giver. I know y’all are excited. Fake it. Wouldn’t it be great if everybody tithed? At the end of the service, well, I could say, you can come to the altar and confess your sins. Y’all just all come to the altar. This next part really is exciting. Okay? You ready? God's house, God's house is a place of prayer, but it's also God's house is a place of help and healing. Now follow with me to this. And He said them, it is written, my house is called a house of prayer. But you've made it a den of thieves. He cleanse the house just like if you'll cleanse your house. Then the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple and He healed them. See, I think there's something special about coming to church. I think there's something special about gathering together like we are today.
James Greer: [00:12:35] I think there's something special when you come to church and you have hurts and you need healing and you have emotional, physical, and financial problems. And see what He said, they cleansed the church. And God’s saying, man, maybe today there's some people that need to cleanse their life where you can have some help, you can have some healing that you've been waiting for. And He goes on to say, again, I say to you, that if two of you agree on Earth concerning anything that you could ask and it would be done unto you by my Father in Heaven. My goodness, I know that we have where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there in the midst of it. I told you that Jesus was in the midst of us. Amen? There's more than two or three here. Amen? So why in the world would you not gather together and pray and ask for God to help and heal? Amen? He could turn around your greatest need. It could be today. And something special about coming into God's house and ask what you need. One, it humbles you. It's humbling to come and get on your knees or your face before God. Get with two or three people and ask God what you need.
James Greer: [00:13:42] I mean, way back in James 5:14, it says, if any among you sick, it might be physical, it might be emotional, it might be spiritual, let him call the elders of the church and let them pray over him, anointing him with all in the name of the Lord. Then it goes on. It says this. And the prayer of faith will save the sick and the Lord will raise him up. You know, it said the sick. All sickness is not because of sin. Okay? Y’all ready? But some sickness is because of sin. And the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sin, he confesses it. Confess your trespasses one to another and pray one for another. Why? That you might be what? Healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. If you read the rest of it, he said, and he prayed and it did not rain for three years. He prayed again and it rained. That's a pretty powerful prayer. Amen? He also said he was a man just like me and you. But he said the effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man, woman, boy, girl availeth much. He said, if you’d get right this way with God and you get right this way with others, your prayers can be unbelievably powerful. Why wouldn’t you today when you know there's two or three, you know God's here and God's presence here, why wouldn't you do that? In other words, God's presence, God's promises equal God's power. And you've got every one of them here today, and you're going to have an opportunity to exercise that today.
James Greer: [00:15:09] So as we get ready to close, I want you to know, God knows your heart right now. He knows that you're more focused on the Word that we're preaching or the world outside. He wants you to do the Word. He wants you to say, hey, men, he wants you to understand you need to be tough certain times, you protect, you provide, but you be tender. He wants you to make a decision on somebody, saying, maybe I need to start tithing, maybe I need a little bit and work my way up. That's up to you. But He wants you to know that God's house not only is a place of prayer, it's a place of helping and it's a place of healing. And He wants you to say there's two or three are gathered together in His name that He’s there. He said, ask anything in His name. You have the opportunity here right now if you stand and let me pray with you and pray for you. God, you're awesome, God. I thank you that we can come into your house. You said ask and it shall be done to them. There's people that have real burdens in their life, and they're not here by accident.
James Greer: [00:16:11] They're here by divine appointment. Let us humble ourselves and come before you. Let us intercede for some people. Maybe they're not here today. Maybe it's somebody that needs to be here. Maybe you have an important decision to make. Maybe it’s health, maybe it's a relationship problem, maybe it’s a decision to make about work, about finances. And you know, God said, listen, He's not hiding from you. You're hiding from Him. He said, if you need wisdom, He said, why don't you ask? I give it liberally. God wants to be with you and for you and go before you. Maybe you’re here today and you're not sure that you're saved. Man, today's a good day. We've had several just say we want to give our lives to the Lord. Means you know that you’ve sinned and you’d like God to forgive you your sins and come into your heart and be the Lord of your lives. That's all you got to say. Maybe you've never been publicly baptized since you were saved, and today's the day you'd like to do that. Maybe you'd like to join the church. You've been visiting and say, hey, I've been visiting and dating long enough. I want to make it permanent and today's the day I’m going to do it. I pray today you’d let God have His will and His way in your life. It’s in the precious name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

Amen.
