Resurrection Road: How to Know if You’re Truly Saved
James Greer: [00:00:00] Hey, by the way, baptized five of them in a row. That was exciting. Amen? Not only did they get baptized, but I married them. And they're still married. Man, I'm so excited. We're starting a new series. It's Road to the Resurrection. And this Sunday, as you can tell, we're preaching on Palm Sunday. Some people call it the triumph entry. But this Sunday, I'm only going to have three points. Yeah. But with that, I'm gonna tell you, they could radically change your life because point one - This is not it. This is kind of the introduction - is the Word of God is always true. And if I asked you if you believed God's Word, if you believed in God, everybody would say what? Yes. But you're going to find out today that does not necessarily mean that you're saved. It just, you're going to say, we're going to find out about when they said Hosanna, Hosanna. A week later, they were saying, crucify Him. And people are kind of fickle. You know? And so, but if you learn the Word and you believe the Word and you act on the Word, man, it can radically change your life.

James Greer: [00:01:11] Because see, God is with you and He's for you and He's going before you. And so see, as Christians, you shouldn't just be wandering around. Now that's for non-Christians. Christians are not wanderers. They're explorers. They kind of like adventure. So God's already got a trail. He's already got a path for you, and I'll prove it later on. And so see, once you understand the Word is true and God is with you and He's for you and He's going before you, you're no longer a wanderer. You got an exciting, exploring life for you. Life becomes more of an adventure than just wandering around. So in Matthew 21:1, it tells you, it starts out and it tells you that the first time Jesus went, now, when they drew near to Jerusalem, they came to something or another and the Mount of Olives. I know that if I want to say it. Then Jesus sent two disciples. Now this is the first time Jesus came to the Mount of Olives. But I'm going to tell you what, and they were saying Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna. But and then they crucified Him a few weeks, a few days later. But He's coming back. He's coming back to that same place, and it might be soon. But anyway, Zechariah says in 14:4, it says, and in that day, talking about Jesus, His feet are going to stand where? On the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the East. And the Mount of Olives, shall be split in two from the East to the West, making a very large valley, half the mountain shall be moved towards the north and the other half to the south.

James Greer: [00:02:44] In other words, He said, listen, I came once, and a week later, they crucified me. But when I come back, I'm the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and I'll be Lord. Nobody can crucify me then. Amen? So that's telling you is you need to watch what's going on in the world and Israel. That's where everything is going to happen close to the end. Okay? Okay. Now we're talking about point number one. God's Word is always true. And if God's Word is always true and if you believe it and you follow it, you'll go from being just a wanderer to an explorer. So it says this in Matthew verse 2, it says this. Say unto them, go into the village, and immediately, you will find a donkey tied and a colt with her. Loosen them and bring them to me. In other words, he's saying, listen, He didn't just say go run around. He didn't just say, well, go try to find a donkey and a colt.

James Greer: [00:03:34] I mean, there's some Christians, it just seems like you're wandering all over the place. I wonder where I should work. I wonder who I should marry. I wonder what I should do. I wonder if I go to church. You don't need to be wandering around like that. God said, listen, go to the village opposite you and immediately you're going to find the donkey. I mean, He told them what to do, told them what they were going to find, and told them what to do. Loose him and bring him to me. So if God said do it, you just go do it. They had never been there. I mean, life's an adventure. Man, don't you like to go to some place you've never been before like Iceland? Huh? Wasn't that fun? We went there a few years ago. You'd never been there had you? No? But it was fun. I mean, that's kind of what God was saying to them. Hey, I want you to go somewhere. You've never been there. Just go do it. So what God's saying is if you start doing what I say, you don't just have to wander around. And then He said, listen, and if anyone says anything to you, this is fantastic, you shall say, Lord, the Lord needs of them and immediately, he's going to send them with you. You know, God not only tells you what to do, where to do it, and what. But God says, listen, I want to know if you've got a problem, I already got the answer.

James Greer: [00:04:44] He's gone before you. He's with you. And He said, if you've got a problem, He's already got the solution before you ever have it. Some of you come today and you've got a problem. But the problem is you and me, we try to work out the problem. God says, listen, I've already got a solution to your problem. Sometimes God allows the problems in our life because He's trying to get us back on the right path. You're going to find it later on in Ephesians. He said, I've already preordained a path for you, and when you walk in it, it's a good life. So we get our direction from God’s Word, from the Holy Spirit, from our authorities, and the problems in our lives. I mean, when I have financial problems, God, you got my attention now. I even start praying more then. When everything is going great, sometimes I say, hey, God, thank you for what I’ve got. Let’s rock. I got some of the shortest prayers you’ve ever heard in my life. I say, just remember this person, that person. You know what they need. But man, when I'm having problems, I say, oh God, help me. Precious Jesus, show me what I need to do. I'm sorry I didn't ask you before I got into this. You know?

James Greer: [00:05:47] But God says, listen, what He's telling you, He's already got the answer to your problem. Don't you realize? Those two disciples, they weren't wandering around. They were exploring. They almost were like having an adventure. And then just said, hey, I want you to know I got a solution to your problem before it ever comes up. Verse 4 says this. It says, and this was done that they might be fulfilled which was spoken of by the prophet, saying: tell the daughter of Zion, behold, your King is coming to you. Lowly, sitting on a donkey, a colt, and a foal of the donkey. Jesus’s saying, I’m going to tell you something. You know? Five hundred years ago, already prophesied this is going to happen. I'm just telling you guys where you'll know it's going to happen.

James Greer: [00:06:45] I mean, you do know that Jesus wasn't just now born, right? You know Jesus has always been and always will be? He was just reincarnated at His birth. And so He said, you go tell them. I'm just fulfilling what has already been told 500 years ago. But guys, what I'm trying to tell you, God’s Word is always going to come true. He said, I told you 500 years ago. Now I'm here to prove it. In fact, He said in Zechariah 9:9, he said, let me tell you, 500 years ago, I wrote this. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion. Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem. Behold, your King is coming to you. And He is just and having salvation. Means rescue. He's going to rescue you, save you, and behold. And then He says what? Lowly and riding on a donkey and a colt, and the foal of a donkey.

James Greer: [00:07:33] What He's saying is he had to do this to fulfill the prophecy of 500 years ago. He already knew it was going to happen. He was just explaining that what I say is always true. Even if it was 500 years ago, it's going to be fulfilled. God says, listen, whatever God says, it needs to settle it, and that should bring comfort to you and peace to you. Because there's so many things going on in the world today that's not comforting, that’s not sure. Things are changing. You don't understand it. You can't count on it. But listen, you can trust whatever Jesus says. Amen? So just relax. You can't control what's going on in the world, but God can. I know people that are all shook up about everything that's going. What's going to happen to me? What's going on in the world? I don't know, but God does. He's in control. See, if you're a Christian, you don't have to worry about it because He’s going to turn it all around to our good. Amen? So stop wandering around and start enjoying His Word and get into His path. See, when Jesus told the two disciples, you go there, go immediately, told them where to go and what to do, guess what? The donkeys were there, and he found them. It's that simple. See, I want to remind you, though, of something else. Jesus and His Word is trustworthy. Amen? But I want to remind you how fickle, how changeable, how inconsistent, how untrustworthy people can be.

James Greer: [00:08:48] The people on one side, they were saying Hosanna, Hosanna. A week later, they're saying, crucify Him, crucify Him. Okay. Y'all ready? This half, y’all say, Hosanna. Y’all say, crucify Him. Hosanna. Stop! Y’all are the crucifiers now. Crucify him. Hosanna. Crucify Him. That's how fast people can change. See, when Jesus came in, they were saying, Hosanna. That means save me now, save me now. You're the Savior. I mean, I believe it. But when He didn't do what they wanted, crucify Him, crucify Him. Let me tell you what that means. You can have people in your life as long as you're giving and doing for them, oh, man, you're the greatest. I love you. Love you. I'm going to be with you forever. You love me? I love you. And we're all agreeing with each other. And then you stop or you can't do it anymore. Oh, you suck. Traitor, I hate you.

James Greer: [00:09:56] And some of you are surprised when that happens. It happens in families. It happens in marriages. It's just going to happen. But God's teaching you something. Sometimes He wants you to trust in Him. That's why it tells you in 1 Corinthians 2:5 that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of man. But what? The power of God. So next time that happens, say, hey, man, God may be changing my directions or He's trying to get my faith to be in Him and not a person. He told you that in Hebrews 13:8, you don't have to worry about Him. I'm the same today, tomorrow, and forever. He says, I'm the same yesterday, today, and forever. I mean, He's just there. He had the triumph entry in the Mount of Olives, and He's coming back to the same place. You know what he said three chapters later when they were asking Him, when are you going to come back? Have y’all ever heard this verse? Wars and rumors of wars. That was only three chapters later.

James Greer: [00:10:53] He said, this has got to happen before I can come back. See, you got wars and rumors of war going on right now. Amen? He said, these have to happen before I come back. He said, those are the birth pains. That's before I come back. That's before even the tribulation. That's the birth pain. That means, hey, man, you better get ready. I don't think you have to worry about the prophecy. I think you just need to be ready when He comes back. Amen? But there's this saying. If you'll just do what God says, you'll enjoy the blessings of it, even though that they only enjoyed Hosanna for a week or two, it would have been great to be with the disciples and see the blessing.

James Greer: [00:11:34] Because what He said was this. In verse 6, it says, so the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. If you don't get anything else, if you'll just do what Jesus commands, you'll have some blessings. If you’ll just do it. So the disciples did as Jesus commanded them. What they do? They just brought the donkey and the colt and they laid their clothes on them and set Him on there. I mean, you know, I was thinking of the other day, you know, we did bring a donkey through. Was that cool? But you know what they did after that in verse 8? There's this great multitude, and they spread their clothes on the road. I was trying to figure out how can we do that? I said, but we better not do that here. I was gonna say, you know, the kids are up here and they're bringing the donkey. Okay, y'all, spread your clothes. I said that might be a problem today. But anyway, others cut down branches from the trees and they spread them on the road. And here now they're all excited. And there's a great multitude who went before those that followed, crying out, saying Hosanna, in other words, save us, son of David. Then they started saying, oh man, blessed. I mean, man blessed is He. They’re blessing Jesus. They're saying, I mean, we want you to bless Him. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord saying, Hosanna in the highest.

James Greer: [00:12:53] And then, you know what He says? And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, who is this? You know? They were just moved by it. So the multitude said, this is Jesus, the prophet of Galilee. So even though it didn't last, wouldn't it had been something to be one of the disciples who went and got the donkeys? And they said, man, the whole city. I was a small part of this just because I went and did this little thing. And they were saying, Hosanna and blessed. And man, one of the greatest things you'll ever do in your life is obey Jesus and see people's lives change and things happen. At the end of service, we want you all to stay because we have some special recognition to see our - I hope they're all here. Yeah. But, you know, seemed like to me, one of the greatest things to see their lives changed. C.R. is not only about habits and drugs, but everybody needs a life change. But you know, when you see life radically changed like that and you're just even a small part of it, you just say, oh man, praise God. This is so great.

James Greer: [00:14:10] And when you do – yeah. And so that's what it is. And so they obeyed Him. And in a small way for a short time, they got to see it. I think there's nothing greater as a pastor to see marriages change. The last service, Darrell got to baptize a couple, some of their kids. And back in the back, I don't know if you know it, Darrell, they said, you know, they wouldn't have made it. They said they're in the couple's class. They're getting baptized. And I'm thinking, Precious Jesus, that's what it's all about this. Our lives are changing. Our marriage is changing. See, I'm telling you, just start obeying Jesus, and your life can change. But I think we're almost as happy as they are because they don't even know yet what all they've done. Not only is their marriage better, they're going to Heaven.

James Greer: [00:15:03] The Bible says in 3 John 1:4, it says, there is no greater joy than to know your children walk in truth. See, to me, it's not just my physical children, but man, that's great. But to me, it's also my spiritual children. Man when that's happening and I see the changes, it's just fantastic. But that brings me to my last point that really bothers me. When I started thinking about how they could be cheering, Hosanna, bless Him and then a week later saying, crucify Him, I'm saying, God, I pray that we don't have a lot of people coming to church and praising God and then they're really not saved. They're praising in one week, and they're abandoning the next week. That would be dangerous, and I don't want Journey Church people to be like that. I don't want to be responsible for that. But He told us in Matthew 7:22, He talked about that. He said, many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have I not prophesied, have I note preached in your name, have I not cast out demons in your name, have I not done many wonderful things in your name? He said, man, you know, didn’t I come to church, didn't I do all these things? You know what He'll say? And then He will declare to them, I never knew you. Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness. Practice it, became a lifestyle. You came for a while. Then you practiced a different style. You praised God for a while, but then you practiced something else.

James Greer: [00:16:48] You ended up coming for a while, but then you didn't really stay. Revelation gives you another example. He says in Revelation 14:13, He says this. Then I heard a voice from Heaven say, write blessed are the dead who died in the Lord. See, some people that die, God said, it's a blessing because you're going to be with Him. He said, yes, saved in the spirit. You know what? That they may rest from their labor. Why? Because their works follow them. While they're on Earth, man, they work for the Lord and, they serve God. Let me tell you what, what you do here on Earth does matter in Heaven. There's a lot of things that you do here that are not going to matter. But your works will follow you in Heaven. You got to remember what you're doing now is going to change in Heaven. And if you're not careful, everything you're worried about, everything you do, it ain't going to matter when you die. Ooh, that's good, Brother James.

James Greer: [00:17:35] Anyway. Matthew 5:16 says, so let your light so shine to men that they may see your good works and glorify the Father. So everybody's kind of wondering now, how can I know that I'm going to Heaven? In the Book of James, they were confused. They were saying, some people say it's my faith. Some people say it's my work. So what do we do? Well, James starts clarifying. Thus, also faith by itself, if it does not have work, it's dead. If it's just faith, it doesn't work. Maybe they're not saved. But someone will say, you have faith and I have worked. Well, show me your faith without your works, and I'll show you my faith by my works. He said, let's figure this thing out. He said, let me tell you something. You ready? You believe that there is one God.

James Greer: [00:18:30] I ask y’all at the beginning, and everybody said yes. You do well. Did y’all know even the devil believes and trembles? Just because you say you believe, that does not mean you're saved. The devil believes, but he's going to hell. Now, sometimes the devil bothers you so much that you need to tell him where he's going to end up. Say, devil, you're the one that’s going to end up in hell. Get going. But you're not if you're truly saved, and he's trying to explain to you what it means to be saved. But you need to know that the devil did. Then he says this in verse 20. It’s cool. He said, but do you want to know? Of course, I want to know. Do you want to know? He says, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead. In other words, he said, it's both. When you truly get saved, you want to serve Him. That's where he's telling you. You do. He said, if you're truly saved, you're truly born again, that's how I knew I was not saved. When I got baptized as a child, I know later on in life, I wasn’t saved. I did not only not want to save Him, I didn't want to do good. But He said, look, let me explain it in James 2:22. It says, do you see that faith was working together with works. And by works, faith is made perfect. It means it is complete. It becomes understandable. Your works helps prove to yourself that you're saved. God knows you're saved. Amen? You don't have to prove anything to God, do you? He knows you're saved. But as you have faith and as you have works, it proves it to yourself. You know? That's what happened. It says, just because even you came to church for a while, maybe you're baptized for a while, but that doesn't mean, your faith and works together proves it.

James Greer: [00:20:20] So it really proves it to you. 1 John says this is how you know. You got to be careful. So listen, I want people at Journey Church, I want you to settle it. 1 John 2:19 says, they went out from us, but they were not with us. For if they had been with us, they would have continued with us. But they that went out, they were manifested. They were made known where you would know them. In other words, it made known to them, made known to us. In other words, another translation says, they went out from our number, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had been with us, they would have remained with us. But they withdrew that it might be made plain that they were not with us. Let me tell you the best example of that is Judas. Judas in the Bible, you know, he saw Jesus do miracles. I mean, he was close to Him. He ate with Him. And yet he was not with it. He withdrew from Him. He was not with Him. See, Judas was not saved. And what I'm saying is today, Journey Church, you need to make sure, in other words, not just that I believe God, I want Him to be the Lord of my life. In other words, I want Him to be the ultimate authority in my life. And that's how you know. Not only you got to know there's a time that you sinned, you got to want Jesus in your heart to forgive you of all your sins and Him to be the Lord and authority in your life. That's how you know.

James Greer: [00:21:51] So as I begin to close, if you're not sure that you're saved, today is the day to do it. Don't go home another day. You don't know that you have another day. So I would settle it. What I would not do, I wouldn't worry about what everybody else says because when you die, that's not going to matter what they thought. It's going to matter what you did. Number two, I would start obeying and doing what God’s Word said where I quit wandering around in life and I could start enjoying exploring and have an adventure. You know, the Bible says in Psalms 37:23, it said, the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. In other words, he said, you don't have to wander around. The steps of a good man are ordered by Lord. And He delights in His way. In other words, when you're following the steps of the Lord, you can light its way. Now I'm going to give you Ephesians that really explains salvation. Ephesians 2:8. It says this. For by grace, you have been saved through faith, not of yourself. It is a gift. You cannot earn salvation. Amen? It’s a free gift. If I gave you one hundred dollars, which I'm not, but if I gave it to you and I said, it's yours, I can't take it back. It's yours. For by grace, you have been saved, not of works, lest any man shall boast. In other words, you can't work hard enough to be saved. Amen? But then it goes on to explain it. It says, for we are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus. For what? Can y’all say good works? Which He prepared beforehand that we should – uh-oh – walk in in Him. Man, he said, listen, man, don't wander around. Walk in mine. Let me read the amplified version for you. Man, I love the way he wrote it. Here it is. For we God's own handiwork, His workmanship created in Christ Jesus, born anew that we may do those good works, which God predestined. In order words, He prepared ahead of time for us. Taking paths which He prepared ahead of time, look, that we should walk in them, living the good life. Wouldn’t you like to live the good life? Amen? He said I already prepared a life, and I want you to walk in that which I prearranged and I made ready for us to live. God said, I want you to know I already prepared a good life for you.

James Greer: [00:24:24] I want you to walk in it. So maybe first you need to settle your salvation. Number two, maybe you need to be like Brooke did. She got baptized today. I asked her while ago, I said, don't you feel better now? She said, amen. It's just great to settle it. Baptism did not save her, but it had drawn her to that point. And she said, I want to settle it. I was preaching. I was at this church, and Mike Scott baptized me. I'm not going to ask you how old he was because he tells the story different. But anyway. But I'd been preaching at this church, and I knew at that point I was saved. But I knew I wasn't baptized when I was younger, and I wanted to settle it. And maybe some of y'all did that. Maybe need to join the church. Quit dating. You know, after a while, you know, you date, you date, you date, you date. Sooner or later, you get married, right? Maybe you've been dating, and now, you know this is the church. We're going to have some counselors on the front. Maybe you need to talk to them. Maybe you need them to come pray with you because 1 John 5:13 said, these things I've written to who believe in the name of the Son of God that you might know you have eternal life. God wants you to know, not think about it. He wants you to know that you have eternal life. Would you stand and let me pray for you? God, I love you for your work because it's quick and it's powerful.

James Greer: [00:25:44] It's alive. God, I thank you that your presence is here, your power is here. I pray today if there's somebody that's not sure that they're saved, they would make that decision this morning. God, if they want to join the church, today would be the day, follow through in baptism. God, they just want somebody just to pray and just to be with them, God, I pray that you’d have your will and your way. And I pray it in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.
