If you struggle to understand God's purpose for you, the first step is understanding that you were born for Greatness! When you understand your purpose and begin to live it fully, you come into your greatness. God has already gone before us and prepared the way. We only need to walk into our destiny and greatness. Video recorded at Pineville, Louisiana.

This is a transcription of the sermon. People speak differently than they write, and there are common colloquialisms in this transcript that sound good when spoken, and look like bad grammar when written.

James Greer (00:00):
Man, I'm excited. We started our new series, You Are Born for Greatness. Amen? Not only are you born for greatness but there's really a danger. Today, most of you, your danger is not to just to ruin your life but there's a great danger of wasting your life. Boy, Table, y'all are out there rocking the house. Huh? Glad to see y'all at the 10:30 service. Hey, but anyway, you know, you just get up. You go to school, you go to work, you come home. You get up, you go to school, you go to work, you come home. You get up, go to school, you go to work, you come home. Just plain old day-to-day mediocrity. And you kind of wake up one day and your life has gone. Instead of greatness, it’s just destroyed. God never created you for that purpose. In fact, Jesus tells us in 14:12, he tells us this. Most surely I say to you, he who believes in me, once you're born again. And if you hadn't done that, today's the day to do that. The works that I do, He'll do also and greater works than these He'll do. Because I'm going to the Father. This greatness involves using your gifts, your talents, your money to further God's Kingdom with the right attitude. Satan, of course, he's a liar and a cheater and a stealer. And he tries to deceive you. He tries to get you to make you want to be great instead of do greater things.

James Greer (01:47):
And so he'll try to get you to use your time, your talents, your money, and your energy for yourself. And so you wake up one day and you're just not happy. You're not satisfied. And many times, he's robbed your life. You will learn today that you can't truly even understand how to handle persecution, pain, and praise correctly until you really understand your purpose. And what I'm hoping today is you really understand your purpose because man, when you understand your purpose, you really begin to live out greatness in your life. And when you live out greatness in your life, you're more satisfied and more content and happier than you've ever been in your life. And nobody can steal it from you. In fact, Jesus tells us you were born for greatness. He said, most surely, it's like I want you to understand something. He said, this is a sure thing I say to you. He who believes in me, the works that I do, He's going to also do and greater works than these, He will do. Because I'm going to go to be with the Father. It was like Fe said, I'm going to go to be with the Father. Now the work’s on you. I mean if you're going to greater works than Jesus, that's pretty great works. Amen? And then He goes on and starts kind of tell us how to do it in the next verse. He says this. And whatever you ask in my name, that will I do.

James Greer (03:11):
That the Father may be glorified in the son. Now see, it doesn't say that you're going to be glorified. It doesn't say that you're going to be great. It doesn't say ask so that you will be great. But it does say that that you can ask. In other words, if I was you, I would be asking God, God, right now, what are the great things you want me to do? How do you want me to make a difference in the world? In fact, I'm working right now and hope to have it by next week is how to be a part of a world changer. We're going to have a hundred people in our church that are going to sign up to say, I want to help a hundred people. In fact, you can do it today at the end of the service. You can take your next step card and you can just check and say, I want to be a part of a hundred people helping people. But I love it because He just said, if she asked anything in my name, I'll do it. But He said, I want you to ask that it glorifies the Father. So I started thinking, I've been working on this message for a long time. So back in January, I made a list of things that I'm going to ask God for. And then I sent it to the staff. I said, God, before Easter, first of all, I want to change our attitude. I don't want us to come to work and say, it's not what I have to do. It's what I get to do. Amen? So every time when I see somebody, especially if it's at church and they say, well, I have to do this. No, you don't have to do it. You get to do it. Amen?

James Greer (04:30):
You don't have to work here. You don't have to come here. You get to do it. Amen? So be excited that you get to come to church. Y'all didn't have to come to church. Y'all get to come church. Amen? You didn't have to marry that person. You got to. Amen? Man, didn't have praise and worship team just rock the house a while ago. You didn't have to participate. You got to participate. When you learn this, after a while you’ll learn, Monday, when you got to work, you didn't have to go to work. You're going to learn you get to go to work and you're going to learn how come you get to go to work. So one of the things we're going to learn, we said, listen, I don't want us to have to do anything. We get to do it. The other thing I said, you know, back then, the virus was so heavy and so many people were cautiously, courageously careful. And there's nothing wrong with that. But back then, we were running, you know, 400, sometimes 500. And I said, God, by Easter, I'd like to see us run 800. Yeah. 800. I think Easter, we ran 1,242. Amen? I mean God said, look, I’ll give you 800 and then some. Amen? And then we had another 2,700 watching on Facebook. Amen? And some of them were from India. Did you know that Jesus said you can do greater works. I mean Jesus only went about 34 miles. I don't even think he went to India. I don't know. But I mean we had people all over the world. Amen? So I said, God, how about 24 people be baptized?

James Greer (06:03):
You know, every person has a name. Every name matters to God. And if they matter to God, they matter to us. I mean every person this side of hell owes everybody a clear presentation on how to go to Heaven. Amen? So we didn’t baptized 24. We already baptized 26. That was number 27. Amen? And the next service we got 28, 29. So God, He just keeps rocking and rolling. And then I said, hey, God, how about the parking lot? I mean, you know, I really, our parking lot was looking bad. I said, God, I'd like to asphalt our parking lot. I know that's $50,000, you know, but, you know, and we had a certain level. I said, God, when we reached that level, let's do that. You know? And I was kind of struggling. And I said, man, Easter's coming. I don't know. God graciously gave somebody some extra money and they came up and give us a check for $35,000 and we took it. Amen? Anybody else wants to give us that check? We'll take it too. No problem. And I wrote Psalms 50:10. I love Psalms 50:10. Y'all ready?

James Greer (07:12):
It says, then every beast of the forest is mine and the cattle on a thousand hill. I said, God, just converts some of those cattle into cash and send it our way. Amen? And He did it. And so we got a new parking lot. Amen? I mean God just kept on and on and on. And I know Deuteronomy 8:18 says, and shall remember the Lord your God. He's the one that gives power to get wealth. And so God just, this was all back in January. Amen? And so we're just rocking and rolling, rocking and rolling. I said, God, you know, our signs are getting old too. I'd like for us to redo our signs. And so we got the sign on the side done. And man, I'm saying great. And I called Josh. I said, yeah, but I wanted a sign in front too. We just got that a few days before Easter. But it was done. Amen? So we got the signs, we got the parking lot. We’re rocking the house. And I talked to Pastor Steven. I said, how about the nursery? I mean mamas, when they bring their kids, they want a nice nursery. Okay, mamas? Yeah, baby. And we got a new nursery. It's larger. It’s bigger. It’s cleaner. I mean we got new iPads. We’re fixing to check-in faster. I mean we're rocking and rolling. You know you don't have to wait in line. Y'all can come into the foyer. Amen?

James Greer (08:23):
And man, the nursery. Y'all ought to see the women's bathroom back there. We've got new granite, new floor. I mean it's great. Amen? And then I said, you know, let's paint every women's bathroom on the whole campus. When Momma's happy, everybody's happy. Yeah. And so guess what? God answered every one of them and then some. I mean God says, listen, you can do greater things than I can. He says, one of the ways you do it, He said, you ask. I hope. you're asking God for greater things use in your life. Amen? Greater things that'll bring honor and glory to God. And then He tells us, I've already prearranged it. Number two, He's already prearranged your life for greatness. And He tells us that in Ephesians 2:10. He says, for we are God's workmanship created in Christ, born anew. He said, man, you are my masterpiece. When you get reborn, when you get saved, that we may do good work. Uh-oh. God says, you're not saved by good works. But because you're saved, you do good works. Amen? Would you say that God wants us all to do good works? Amen? Then why wouldn't you sign up a hundred people to do good works? I mean I want to resource you. I was talking to the staff this morning. I was so excited. I was so excited. I was sitting there and they were all sitting there. And I said, man, I tell you what. I want to resource the crap out of our people. And Andrew says, I don't know, Pastor, if you should say crap. I said, everybody out there has said crap before. Raise your hand if you've never said crap. Don't, don't, don't.

James Greer (10:02):
CRAP is Christ reverses another problem. Yeah. See there? And so we want to give you so many resources, man, that a hundred people helping people. I mean we, have y'all looked at her website? Y'all go JCPineville.com. It's got Helps for Hurts. That's a counseling thing. You type in almost anything you want to and you can get a counseling tool. You got sermon libraries there. You got resources. We have free books there. I mean my goodness, we can resource you. You can help people. You can be all over. And the Bible says to do this. He said, He created you in Christ Jesus. You're born anew that you may do those good works which God predestined. He planned ahead of you. Not only did He plan ahead for us, taking the path for which, you know what He did? He prepared ahead of time. You know why He did it? That you could walk in them. In other words, you work and walk. You work and walk. It's like chewing gum and walking. I mean you got to do two things at once. You work and walk. Right? Amen? Then you live the good life which He preordained and He made ready for you. God said, I've already gone ahead of time. I prearranged a good life for you to walk in it. Wouldn't you like to have the good life? Amen? Well, working and walking the prearranged life that He has for you, they go hand in hand. And we're going to have a hundred people sign up to help people. Amen?

James Greer (11:34):
Finding your purpose will find significance. When you learn to live it out, you really find your purpose. Self-centeredness robs significance. Self-centeredness is the root of most problems. It’s the root in your marriage. One of the root problems is self-centeredness in relationships and friendships, in emotions and spirituality. Self-centeredness just robs you. Significant comes when you began to learn, I'm going to spend my time, my energy, my money helping other people. When I learned to walk out what God pre-arranged and preordained ahead of time for me to do. Learning to live it out. Live out the good life. You just can't isolate yourself. I mean the devil has been very successful causing people to isolate themselves and you help only you and your family and you don't step outside that. And what happens is you don't find the significance and the fulfillment and the greatness that God created you for. Selfishness and fulfillment, they can't co-exist together. I've told you this before but spiritually healthy people help people. When you get saved, you have an inward desire is born within you just to help people. I told you before, hurting people hurt people. Insecure people need attention and reassurance. But healthy people help people. Jesus tells us how to find our purpose. It is the same purpose He had. Jesus' purpose was to serve, to seek, and save. Jesus’ purpose was to serve. Say serve. Seek and save. In Mark 10:45, He tells us this. It said, the Son of man, He didn't come but to be served, but to serve. Well, that just eliminated a bunch of people because your life is lived to be served.

James Greer (13:45):
And Jesus says, all people that you live to be served, you're not satisfied. The real people that are satisfied serve. And so what God said, Son of man didn't come to be served but to serve. And He gave his life a ransom for many. When is the last time you served somebody else? I'm talking about outside your family. So one of the ways that you start finding your greatness is serving other people. Second, Luke 19:10, the Son of man came. What'd He come to do? He came to seek and to save the lost. So see, when you're really finding your purpose, when you're walking out your life, when you're living the good life, you look for ways to serve other people and you look for people that are lost. You go to work and you say, hey, I wander who's lost here? You don't got to say, I can't believe they're living like hell. I can't believe they're lost. You say, hey, praise God, I got somebody that’s lost here. I get an opportunity to minister to them. God sent me here to seek and serve. How can I, maybe I can find them in church, maybe I can get them to devotion. When they have a hard time, maybe I can pray with them. Man, God has sent me here to minister. Amen? So it changes your perspective. I'll tell you ahead of time. Are y'all ready?

James Greer (15:01):
You're not going to believe this. But do you know that your job, where you work, your home, and your hobby is your ministry? When you really learn that your work, your job, your hobby, that's your ministry and that's your greatest place for greatness. You go to work and say, man, my ministry is today. And what does that mean? I'm going to find somebody to serve. I'm going to look for people that are lost. I'm going to seek and save those people who are lost. Because see, when you understand, when you understand your purpose, only then can you understand the pain and the persecution when it does come your way. Let me give you something that's so important. You can't truly understand how to handle persecution, pain, or praise until you correctly understand your purpose. On the other hand, when you truly understand your purpose, you can handle any persecution, pain, and praise. Most people don't handle persecution and pain or ridicule and praise correctly because you don't know your purpose.

James Greer (16:19):
Jesus understood His purpose was to serve, to seek, and to save. How did He handle it when He was persecuted? They had beat Him and they put Him on the cross. Amen? Now to Jesus on the cross. And Jesus said, forgive them, for they know not what they do. If I was Jesus, I’d say, rain down fire and kill them. Amen? Because I wouldn't have known my purpose. But Jesus knew His purpose was to seek and to save. So He's on the cross and He's praying for Him to forgive them. He wanted them to get saved. Amen? Now, when somebody says something, you do you just want to say something ugly back. Amen? I do. Do unto them as they did upon me. And we do it worse. That's because we don't know our purpose. See, it wouldn't matter if you were at work, at school, or at a hobby. When you truly knew your purpose, when persecution and pain or praise came, you would know it’s to be used to serve and to seek and to save. You can only come into greatness and what you were created for when you clearly understand your purpose and you began to live it out. You can live it out. You live it out. Proverbs 3:5 says this. Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He'll make your path straight.

James Greer (17:55):
So how do you find greatness where you're at? Well, one of the problems today is everybody tries to find identity in their job, where they work, what they do. You know, part of your identity and you find your purpose in your job. The problem is you do know you spend three-fourths of your life on your job? A third of your life, I mean a third of your life is spent with the people you work with. Many people enjoy their job and they have pride in it. But they say 60% to 65% of the people are not fulfilled. Younger, 30 and under, it's as much as 80% of the people are not happy and they're not fulfilled on their job. Would y'all like to know why? Thank you. Would y'all like to know why? There you go. Because they're trying to find their identity and worth in the wrong place. They're trying to find it in their job. You're not supposed to find it there. You don't find your identity and worth in the job. That is your ministry. You got to understand I'm going to work. My job, my hobby, that's where I go. That's my ministry. That's where I find my greatness. That's where I live it out. That's not where I find my significance. I find my greatness there. Let me tell you, how do you find your greatness where you are? You have to learn to find your greatness, your identity in Christ. Not your job, not your career, not your hobby, not your looks, not your body, not your personality. I've been preaching this for 35 years. But I understand. I understand most people don't listen. My own staff doesn’t even listen. I teach it year after year. I give these little brochures out. I'm teaching this lesson.

James Greer (19:46):
And Joy, she's trying to be sweet. You know, I said, I want to make sure we put this in there. I said that in writing. She says, Pastor, are you sure you want to put this in there? I said Joy, I'm sure I want to put it in there. I know I've done it 15 times. It takes our group about 15 or 20 times to get it. It took our staff about 10 years. Do you know why I know you don't get it? Because I see more and more people that are unhappy. They're unhappy with how they look. They're unhappy where they work. They're unhappy with their mate. They're just unhappy people. You're trying to find your happiness in the wrong people, in the wrong places, in the wrong thing. You got to get your worth through Christ. Amen? So I want you to take this little book, the one that says Who You Are in Christ. I don't want you just to throw it away like you've been doing. I want you to take it home. I want you to read it. I want you to learn it and I want you to believe it. And everybody said amen. I have it pinned and stuck in the front of my Bible. If I've needed it for 35 years, I think y'all need it for a day or two. Amen? Matthew 13:16, this is what it says. Blessed, happy, excited are your eyes, for they see. And for your ears for they hear. You're happy. Man, when you come to church and you're seeing and you're hearing and your applying, you're a happy person.

James Greer (21:13):
And I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desire to see and they don’t see. They desire to hear and they don't hear. I want you to see and hear. Amen? Because insecurity comes from misplaced identity. See, I want you to understand that your school, your job, your hobby is your ministry. It wasn't created to make you mad. It's not created for madness. It’s created for ministry. You think your job drives you crazy. Amen? That's because you don't understand the purpose of your job. Your school, your job, your hobby, it's not to drive you to the madness. It's to drive you into ministry. See, the madder you get, you're missing your ministry. The people that drive you crazy on the job, God sent them there on purpose for you. He's teaching you patience and He wants you to learn to minister to them. Y'all don't laugh. Same thing for y'all at church. He sent me there for y'all. Second, you have to learn to find your purpose in Christ. It says, for we are His workmanship created in Jesus Christ for good works. You were created for good works. Amen? I'm not saying that. The Bible says that. In Jesus Christ for what? Good works. I want a hundred people saying I want to do good works. Amen? And we want to help supply you. I mean we'll give you free devotions. You can bring them to work and hand them out all over the place. Amen?

James Greer (22:50):
If you go to work, if they'll let you, hand them out. Put them out everywhere. If somebody is in need, pray with them. Amen? If somebody’s in the hospital, get them food. I mean we need to be helping people. Good works which God prepared before you that you should walk in. God said, I've got people all around. I've already prepared for them. Do you know when you go to work, when you go to school, when you go to your home, God said there might be people that are placed around you just where you can do good works for them? So everybody should sign up. I want to be one of the hundred. Amen? What I want to be a hundred for? I want to do good works. Why? Because God call me to do it. When I walk in that, I find the good life. God, that’s good, Brother James. Third, you have to learn to live it out. It's more about how than where. Man, people have grown up thinking it's where I work, it's what I do at work, it's what job I have. No, it's not. It's how you do it. Boy, when you learn that, you can learn to, wherever you at. It's one thing to know your purpose. It's another thing to live it out to the glory of God. I'm going to give you a verse and you're going to shout, how does that do working good works? Let me give it to you. 1 Corinthians 13. It says, if I speak in tongues of men, even of angels, but I don't have love, I'm Just like a sounding gong and clanging cymbal.

James Greer (24:28):
In other words, God's saying this. Man, let me tell you. If you're a great speaker yet you don't have love, you don't even know your purpose. In other words, if you don't have love, love cares about the other person. Love wants the best for the other person. When you go to job, when you go to home, when you go to school, when you have your hobby, do you look and say, man, I want the best for that person more than me? If not, you missed it. If I have the gift the prophecy and, you know, and knowledge and if I have faith that I can move a mountain but I don't have love, uh-oh, I don't have anything. I'm missing it again. If I was a great preacher, if I had great knowledge, if I had great faith but I don't have love, I don't have anything if I'm not helping other people if I don't care about them. If I give my possessions to the poor, if I surrender my body to the flames but I don't have love. If I just give it away, if I give it to be seen, I've missed it. If I'm giving it away but I don't do it in love, I missed it.

James Greer (25:28):
Then it goes on. It says, man, out of these three, if I have faith, hope, and love, love is the greatest. Do you understand what it's saying? It's not so much about where you're at but it's how you’re doing it where you're at. It's not so much about work and play. It’s how you work and play. And when you're working and playing, do they see Christ in you? Those that you work with, those that you play with, do they see the love of Christ? Do you have a loving, caring attitude in every area of your life? Are you living out your purpose? Are you edifying Christ? We live out our purpose in our actions and our attitudes. It's not one or the other. They go down the same track. In summary, it’s just this. Our purpose is to use our time, our talents, and our money to further God's Kingdom with the right attitude that others see Christ in us. It's not so much where we work. It’s how we work, how we spend our money, how we spend our time, how we spend our talents.

James Greer (26:26):
Do we minister those that are hurting? Do we give above our tithes to those people that are in need? Maybe have you brought food to somebody that was sick? Do you give devotions out? Do you pray for those that are at work? Do those people around know that they can come to you and that you would pray for them? It's not so much where are you go to school, where you work, your home, your work, your hobby. That is your ministry. That's where you become greater. That's where you do greater works. Let me close and make it real simple. I want everybody here to know their purpose. God's first purpose is for every one of you to know Jesus Christ as your Savior. If you're here today and you're not sure if you died, you'd go to Heaven, it's God's purpose for you to know his Son. He loved you so much, He sent his son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for you and He rose on the third day. And that means if you know that you're a sinner and you come in just a moment and you put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ, you can be one of those that you know that you're going to Heaven. That's God's purpose for you right now. Second of all, God wants you to see your school, your home, your work, and hobby as your greatest ministry and your greatest place to do your greatest work.

James Greer (27:55):
I want you to go Monday and I want you to go on your job. And I want you to say, man, this is my ministry. I want you to ask God to lay people upon your heart to pray for, to minister to, to invite to church. Y'all that have the opportunity, we have free devotions. You could get them and you put them out at your company. You can download them. Go to JCPineville.com and look at all the free things. People that are hurting, make sure that you let them know that you care for them, that you'll pray for them. People that are sick, be willing to call them, be willing to care for them, be willing to even take food to them. Third, you have to have a desire. We’re at this great time at church, y'all. I can't believe the people that have the desire to do greater things for God. In fact, right now I'm writing a brochure to be world changer. And Joy’s so excited that she's going to get to put it together before Wednesday. I already got 28 pages written. And when you want to really be a world changer and you want to make a difference, by next Sunday, hopefully we're going to have it together. And every single person, if you have a desire, you can be a world changer. It starts today though for you making a decision, I want to be one of the people to help people. And you just take out your next step card. I think everybody, they have a next step card in their brochures I think. And you just write your name on there, your phone number, and your carrier, put your email if you want to and say, I want to be part of those. And we're going to resource you and we're going to help you.

James Greer (29:39):
You got to understand that God wants to use you. Jesus said, I want you to do greater works than I do. He's not hiding from you. He wants to help you do it. But you got to stop and be honest with yourself. Who did I minister to last week? Who did I add value to? Who did I pray with? Who did I encourage? Who did I bring a devotion to? Did I have the right action? Did I have the right attitude? Do they go hand in hand? Do the people that I’m around, the people that I see, do they know that if they have a need, they can come to me because they see Christ in me? When you're serving right, you're satisfied. When you're the one that's always being served, you're never satisfied. God just set it up that way. I want Journey Church people, I want you to know that every member, if you’re a member here, you're to be a minister. And I want you to start learning how to be a minister today. I want you to sign and say, hey, man, I want to be one of the a hundred that’s helping people. Do you know why? Because I know when you do it right, you'll be the most satisfied, happiest, content person that you've ever been. And you've got to do it and we want you to do it. And so you can sign up. You can do that. Now I also know that some of y'all came today and you're hurting. We don't want you to cover it up. We're a church for hurting people. We're a church that wants to help hurting people. Our greatest ministers at this church are people that came that were really hurting and they've turned their lives around. Abigail gave that wonderful testimony.

James Greer (31:26):
She came here hurting. She got into CR and her and Dustin are great ministers today. We have marriages that are here. They came. They were split up. Many of them were in other relationships. Now they're together. I had one of them telling me they're happier now than they've ever been in their entire life. We had people that are in their second marriages that they're happier than ever in their life. We’ve got ones that weren't going to stay together that have stayed together and happier than they were last. I mean we've got testimony after testimony. But when they came, they were hurting. We had people that that day, that week, they were going to take their lives and they didn't and now they're happier than they've ever been. They're most productive. They serve. But if you're here and you're really hurting, we want to know that you're hurting. We want to help you. You can write it on the next step card or we're going to have the altar open and you can come. So if you would, would you stand and let me pray with you and pray for you? God, I thank you for your Word. First, God, I pray for those that maybe don't know you as their Savior, that they would come today and know that they would go to Heaven. God, for those that are hurting, I pray that they would come, the hurting would come and they would get help. They would get ministered to, God. I pray for those, God, that are in the hospital like Steve and the other ones, Corbin, God, that you minister them and their family. God, I pray for those that maybe need to come and join the church and make this their home church, that they would come and they would do it today or they would do it in their next step card.

James Greer (32:51):
I pray for every single member here today that they would say, hey, I want to be one of the hundred that help other people. I want to serve others. I want to give to others. I need resources where I can help. I know that I'll be more satisfied. I want to be more attentive when I go on the job Monday. I want to understand that's my ministry. It's not just a job. That's where I can do my greatest work. Those people that are hurting, God, make me be sensitive to pray with them, to pray for them. Maybe there's somebody here that needs to be baptized. We just had baptism. You can be baptized the next service or next week. We got clothes. We got t-shirts. Or you can do it the next week. Maybe that you weren't baptized since you are saved and God's placed upon your heart right now, you need to leave all your junk in the past. You need a brand new life and you need to come down or you need to mark it on your card. So whether it’s to get saved, join the church, follow through in baptism, maybe you want to be one of the hundred that help other people, every single person here, I'm telling you, you need to find your ministry. You need to find your purpose where you can find what Jesus called you to do. And as you walk out your life, He says, you'll find a good life. God, I pray that each person here, God, would make the decision that you'd lay up on their hearts. In Christ's name I pray. Amen.
