Wired For Worship Week 3: Worship Him-Pastor Darrell
In this sermon we learn about why we are to worship God.
Darrell Ingram

Pastor Darrell tells us in this sermon that worship is critical to our purpose in life. It brings us into the presence of the Lord. We worship God as a response to who He is in our life. It can be painful when God reveals our sin. Video recorded at Pineville, Louisiana.

Darrell Ingram: 00:01 Whoo. Hey, uh, I do want to thank Pastor James. This is the second week in a row that he allowed me to come. I'm telling you, I'm just honored to be here again at Journey Church, the main campus, but I also want to shout out to you all and say, Hey, give it up for the Lord. Yes. Oh, I want to give Alexandria the opportunity. You all give it up for the Lord. I'm telling you, it is good to be in the house of God. It is an opportunity for us to come, to worship, to grow, and to learn more about what God can do in our lives.
Darrell Ingram: 00:29 We're going to come out of chapter 13 this morning of Acts. It says, now there were in Antioch, in the church that was there, prophets and teachers, Barnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius is of Cyrene and Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch and Saul. And while they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy spirit said, set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work, which I have called them. Then they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them. They sent them away. Let's go to the Lord in prayer. Father, Oh ho, ho, what an opportunity that we have every Sunday, every day to worship and praise you. Father, we don't have to come, we get to come. And father, we get to worship you and father this morning that you would open our hearts, that you would open our souls and our ears. Lord, just speak to us. Father, I know I'm a broke vessel and father, I can do nothing apart from you. So father, you stand in front of me, you use me, speak through me Lord, so that it's not me, but it's you and you alone, in Jesus name. Amen.
Darrell Ingram: 02:06 This fall there will be many worship services that will be taking place in every major city in America. People gather in the stadiums to cheer on their favorite football teams. People are going to be involved in worship at stadiums and giving their full attention at church and all eyes are going to be on the teams that are on the field and what they do. Not only are people gathered in the big church for worship service, they are also gathered in small groups, small groups, home small groups or small groups in a sports bar. They gathered together for the same common goal. To check out what's happening on the field.
Darrell Ingram: 02:53 In all their efforts, all their intention, all their focus, all their concentration is on what's happening from goal line to goal line. On Sundays, people will be at big church, at the big church house that has been built and we can call it a worship service. When we call it a worship or we can call a worship service because people, even though it's been a great inconvenience, they are there for an extended period of time to cheer on what they hold of high value. You see, worship will play a key role in clarifying your understanding and expecting God's purpose in your life. Worship is recognition for who God is. Worship is a response to God's presence in your life. In Acts 13:2 it says, they ministered to the Lord while they were ministering to the Lord. That phrase literally means worship. While they were worshiping the Lord, while they were ministering to the Lord, they're going to discover their purpose while they were ministering to the Lord. The people, most people come to church for the Lord to minister to them. Most people come to church to hear what God has to say to them. What God's going to do for them, how God's going to bless them, but they will never discover their purpose for God or in God, by God ministering to them.
Darrell Ingram: 04:38 You see, it's but by our ministry or our worship is when God begins to speak to us is he? God is the audience and you and I are the performers, and you've heard it said that we're worshiping, we're praising, we're singing for an audience of one, and that one is God. God almighty. When you go to a restaurant and you walk in the door, the first person that meets you is a waiter or a waitress, and they take you to your seat and they sit you down and they say, what would you like to have drink? Oh, is everything okay? Are you comfortable? Do you want to change? You know they asked me, do you want to change? Because were a little too tight in the booth. But, but I'm telling you that they minister to you. What would you like to drink?
Darrell Ingram: 05:29 Here's your menu and your response to them ministering to you is the amount of tip that you will leave. So you respond by giving them a tip, whether they are, whether it's anything at all. There are some that I've never wanted to leave a tip with because they were horrible. But you're responding to them ministering to you. So my question is to you is, you came to the restaurant today to meet the living God, did you come to find what he can do for you before you've ever done anything for him? Before you've ever even gotten your praise to him? Before he's ever gotten your prayers? Before he's ever gotten your celebration? Before he's ever gotten your commitment? Are you looking just for the blessings that God can give you? What we're saying to God is we want you to be left out, but we want your blessings. Don't forget, God, I'm coming in. I'm going to leave you out of my life every day, but don't forget to bless me.
Darrell Ingram: 06:49 Notice what the bible was saying. It says while they were ministering to the Lord, their worship was their response to God's presence in their life before you entered the church building. God is sitting, waiting on your arrival, waiting on my revival. What we're going to do when we get here, having not ministered to God. When you leave, having not ministered to him, you will not experience his presence and purpose in your life. You see, there are event Christians. These Christians show up for the show and they want to, they want the event. They want to hear the praise team sing. They want to hear the preacher preach. They want to know what's going on in everybody's life. They're here and they show up for the event and they will come to the event this Sunday and they'll be back next Sunday for the new event. It's like fans in the game. They come to the game this Sunday and they don't care about what happens until the next Sunday when the new game happens. They're there for the event. The problem is if you are an event Christian, you're only here for the show.
Darrell Ingram: 08:25 If you have come for the Sunday event, that means there's a seven day gap between your worship. And if there's a seven day gap between your worship, then what you're looking at is the event today and what it has to offer for you for the whole week. Sundays are not meant for a good meal. You all have a good meal on Sundays? Yeah? no? Amen? Oh no. Let me tell you something. I have a good meal. Whether it's cooked in or it's out. Man, I fill up. We all fill up. We all go out and have that good experience. We have that food, but typically when we eat on Sunday, we're expecting a big meal and that big meal is not expected to last all week. At least it doesn't for me.
Darrell Ingram: 09:32 There are many Christians who eat God on Sunday and starve all week long and wonder why they're malnourished. Even though they go to church. No wonder they look lethargic, weak, broken, and beat down. No wonder we're walking around with sad faces. No wonder Every time I look at a Christian when they're supposed to be happy and joyful, they're sad. It's like we have no hope. It's like we have no joy. It's like we have no life. And we walk around like this day after day after day,
Darrell Ingram: 10:14 Serious fans are not just about the event. They will be at every event. They will come and that event that they do. It's more than events. They're serious things and they want to do it right. They will leave for church two hours before the service starts. They will fight traffic no matter how bad traffic is. They will get to their parking area and their parking area is like two miles away from the big church house and they'll go. It's an inconvenience, but they're willing to do because they are there for who they serve. Even if it's raining, even if it's sunny, they don't care. They walk to get there. Even if it's an in convenience.
Darrell Ingram: 11:14 And one day when they get there, they sit down and the game goes on three hours long and they don't leave church early. Even if it goes over time. they want everything the service has to offer. They know what it's like to leave early with one minute left. They're afraid of what's going to take place on the field and them not being able to see it
Darrell Ingram: 11:29 I remember back a few years back when Kentucky and LSU were playing, and LSU was losing in the last 30 seconds. Me and my son, my oldest son, Eric, were so aggravated at LSU for not playing well. We got up and we walked out and we went into the in the kitchen and Beverly and Shane were the only two in there and they started screaming and jumping. You see what had happened is that team Kentucky, they had rushed the field and that ball got in the hands of LSU and with band members all on that field, LSU took it home for a touchdown.
Darrell Ingram: 12:28 Most people don't want to leave because of that moment. After they get home, after that long walk to their car and the worship on Sunday has taken seven hours, and then decided to be there because the team is worthy of their worship. When they go get home after seven hours of worship experience, they turn on ESPN or NFL network to review what just take a taken place. They meditate on the service, review the sermon and the highlights, the points of the sermon, because they are serious worshipers. And then on Tuesday they start looking at the next sermon, the next service because they're not in it just for the event. You see, worship is a lifestyle and it carries them every week, all season long. If they are willing to go through that much inconvenience for something that doesn't matter much in their daily lives. Explain to me how the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords is only good on a weekly event. Explain.
Darrell Ingram: 13:55 The problem is today, Jesus has fans and not worshipers. Man, when I was studying for this, God was hammering on my heart and said, Darrell, you've become too much of a fan and you don't worship me enough. You’ve got to be willing to give it up and go all in Darrell. Start worshiping me because I am in your presence every day. Man, God got me hard. And this is probably the hardest sermon I've preached to myself. You see, we have people who love the event and who will go for the show and they want the benefit of gathering together, but it says they were ministering to the Lord. That's when the Lord responded. When they were worshiping the Lord. When we praise the Lord, sing songs and you're silent, are you worshiping? When we're praising and you have nothing to say, are you worshiping? You see, if you take God seriously, you can't help but to say something about him, you can't help but not be quiet. You've got to say what he has done for you. Amen? Oh, me. Oh no. Yes.
Darrell Ingram: 14:11 Has God been good to you? Why don't we worship him more? That's what God was saying to me. He said, Darrell have I been good to you? God, you're good to me. Every day. New day, every day brings God new mercies. Every day. I said, God, you bring it to me every day. He said, Darrell, why aren't you giving it to me every day? Darrell, you become a fan and not a worshiper.
Darrell Ingram: 15:24 There's time to change and worship me because I am present in your life. It means something. We worship him as a response to who he is. It says why they ministered. You know, worship is critical, particularly in your purpose. Worship takes us to a whole nother level. Can you all say that with me? Whole nother level. Not neither. I'm saying nother. I'm telling you, when you worship God, it brings you to a whole nother level. Are you all awake? Yeah, so you all repeat this after me. Worship brings us to a whole nother level.
Darrell Ingram: 16:56 And when you truly worship God, you're going to go to a whole nother level. Worship brings us into the presence of God. It brings us into his presence. You know, you turn on the TV nowadays and what do you see? All you see is impeachment this, impeachment that, and that, and that and that. I mean you turn on the TV and that's all you hear and people are turning on it every day to see what's going to happen next. We want to know. Inquiring minds want to know. It's only we get on the TV and we look and we search, what's next. And then a man of God gets up on CNN and the minute he starts talking about God, they cut him off. Everyone wants to know. They want to know about Trump. They want to know about Nancy. They want to know about Barr, Kami, and Biden. They want to know, but don't tell me if we can talk about them all day long, every day long. Why can't we bring God up every day?
Darrell Ingram: 18:17 Well, you heard worshiping, while they were worshiping, while they were focused, while they were more centered on God, while they were praising God, while they were praying to God, while they were acknowledging God. While they were celebrating God. The Holy Spirit spoke. If worship is an event, you will miss out on the spirit of the living God. You will miss out. It'll walk right on by.
Darrell Ingram: 18:32 Isaiah 6:1-8 says this in the year that King Uzziah, ah this is one of my favorite chapters in the whole bible. Isaiah saw the Lord when he thought that thing that was in control wasn't in control anymore. The human King, his human circumstances had died. Have you ever been in a situation that didn't come through for you that maybe died? Because it says, in the year that King Uzziah died, Isaiah saw the real King on the throne and he is high and lifted up. It says his robe filled the temple and it says, the angels were saying what? Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts, and the earth is filled with his glory. Then it says, an angel after they worshiped him, reach down in the altar and took out coals of burning fire. And the angel came and he took the coals and placed it on Isaiah's lips. I bet you that hurt. I remember drinking hot coffee and hot cocoa and all that, and it was too hot. It literally burned my lips, tongue, throat, stomach, everything. They touched his lips with that burning coal of fire.
Darrell Ingram: 20:21 Worship's going to hurt some times. Worship can be painful sometimes it's not always joy. It's not always flipping over pews. It's not always running up and down. Sometimes it's painful. Why? Because God reveals our sins. He says, he says, my lips were unclean, but the angel put the coals on my unclean lips. Then I heard from heaven say, your sin is forgiven you. And when he forgave my sins, he's said this. Who would go from me? Who will speak on my behalf? Who will go from me, who will speak on my behalf? And Isaiah said, here I am, God, send me. God, I want to serve you. I want to commit my life to you. God send me. I want to worship, but God cleaned my lips. So, the same lips that were a mess he's going to use for ministry. He was going to take a failure and use it for his success.
Darrell Ingram: 21:37 He's going to take my mess up and it's so good that God can take our mess ups. You know he takes my mess ups every day and guess what? He said, it's so good that God's going to take my mess ups and he's going to turn it into a miracle. He said, God can take the things that you've messed up in life and turn them into a miracle. So that in turn he gets all the honor, and all the glory, and all the praise. That's our God. That's who we worship. God, I give you my praise. I give you my adoration. I give you my celebration. I give you my confession. I give you my dedication. I give you my surrender. I give you everything. I've got to because God, I've got to hear from you today. God, I'm not going to give up. I'm going to keep running to you.
Darrell Ingram: 22:32 I'm going to keep falling at the halter. I'm going to keep every day giving my life to you. Every day. I'm going to keep calming. I'm going to keep coming. I'm going to keep coming. I'm going to keep searching. I'm going to keep asking. I'm going to keep praying. I'm going to keep singing. I'm going to keep opening up God's word. I'm going to keep on reading. Why? Because I got to hear from God today. God, I've got to hear from you. If you've been walking this earth and becoming a church, Tommy in and time out and you walk out and you haven't heard from God on a daily basis, maybe it's time. Maybe it's time to surrender. Maybe it's time to say, God, I want to go all in. I want to be a worshiper. Not a fan. God I want to be someone that is committed to you, someone that'll serve you, someone that'll step up and step out and bring those that are far from you, close to you. God, that's what I want to do. God, I just can't feel you. God I don't know you. If you're in that situation this morning, maybe today is day for you to come and get to know God. Maybe the day is today for you to come and recommit your life to God. Is that God? I want some of that. I want some of that. I am so excited to be a part of God's family. I'm so excited to tell you what God can do in your life, but I can tell you, but until you take that step, you'll never know. You see, it's there. The rest is your decision. Or as Paul Harvey says, the rest of the story belongs to you. Let's stand and go to the Lord in prayer.
Darrell Ingram: 23:46 Father, I thank you right now. Whoa Lord. For the opportunity to come to worship you, father, to lay it all down. Father. I've been playing church. I've been playing the fan, coming to the events to hear, to listen, but not change. Father, I'm ready to be a worshiper. I'm ready. Come ready to give my life to you. No matter the cost horn. I need you hoe. I need you every hour. Because I need you right now, farther help me. Help us to see and hear from glory. Father, we want to follow you. Father, there's someone here this morning that is hurting. I feel it deep down in my soul. Father, there's someone that don't know there's hope, but I know there's hope. Hope is in your son, Jesus Christ. Father, right now move. Change our heart. Help us to quit being fans and become worshipers. The all mighty God, in Jesus' name. Amen.

Amen.
